JYL BONAGURO
THE CHALLENGE
Self taught marble carver, Jyl Bonaguro, desired to produce a film that captured her artist story and the technique behind her sculptures. After exhibiting her marble sculptures in the US, Jyl decided it was important to visit Italy where Michelangelo, the Italian Renaissance sculptor created his masterpiece. In Pietrasanta she would be able to study under Christian Lange and take her next steps. This journey would lead up to her ultimate goal of carving a female figure at the same scale as Michelangelo's David.
THE SOLUTION
Produce a brand story film that embodies Jyl Bonaguro's unique craft of traditional marble sculpting and technique. We captured stories of her past, along with Jyl at work carving in Italy, to bring the viewer into her world.
During this process we discovered that with only two years of carving and no formal education under her belt, Jyl had a strong desire to experience Statuario marble found only in Cararra, Italy. In Italy, Jyl could connect with a master carver to share, explore, purchase marble to export and create pieces for her future projects.
We followed Jyl to Italy to capture her story where Lifted was brought to life. This documentary film uncovers the real side of marble carving.
Lifted, created in Pietrasanta and Carrera, Italy. This film premiered at Bonaguros May, 2018 Chicago gallery showcase where the largest collection of her work was on display.
